Paper

Everything that is delivered in your mailbox is sorted as paper.

Paper waste must be dry and clean. Paper waste includes e.g. newspapers, magazines, advertisements, catalogues, envelopes (including those with plastic windows), and printing paper.

Gift wrapping paper is useless as recycled paper partly because of the surface, which is heavily coloured, but also because of the quality of the wrapping paper fibres. Instead, it is sorted as mixed waste (combustible waste). Dirty and wet paper is also mixed waste. Books are not suitable for paper recycling and should be reused or put into mixed waste. Moreover, paperboard, cardboard, paper bags and packaging wrapping made of paper are sorted as carton packages.

Waste reception stations at Stormossen, Vaasa, Replot, Isokyrö, Vähäkyrö, Korsnäs and Minimossen have locked containers (240 l) that can be used by private individuals wishing to dispose of confidential documents. The slots of the containers are small, which means that the disposal requires time and patience.

Collected paper is processed and used as raw material for new paper products, e.g. news paper and tissue. In Finland, we are good at sorting paper. A paper is used several times during its lifespan, and over 80% of all paper finds the right sorting container
